Shayan Shirazian, MD

Dr. Shirazian is a nephrologist and clinical researcher interested in early recognition and treatment of diabetic chronic kidney disease (CKD). His current research focuses on the effects of whole blood viscosity on cardiovascular outcomes in diabetic and non-diabetic CKD. After receiving his undergraduate and M.D. degrees from Brown University, he spent five years at Columbia University Medical Center completing his internal medicine training and a nephrology fellowship. During his time at Columbia, he began his career in clinical research working with Dr. Jai Radhakrishnan on the development of electronic tools that promote early recognition and treatment of diabetic chronic kidney disease (CKD). His fellowship research, entitled “Under-Measurement of Quantitative Urinary Protein in Stage 3 Chronic Kidney Disease,” was presented at the National Kidney Foundation’s annual meeting, and he also published his work in several high profile medical journals including Kidney International, the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, and Nature Reviews Nephrology.

In 2010, Dr. Shirazian joined Winthrop-University Hospital, where he is continuing his career in clinical research. His current work with Dr. Harold Brem focuses on the early recognition of diabetic kidney disease and in multidisciplinary strategies to slowing the progression of diabetic CKD. At present, he is the principal investigator for four ongoing clinical trials, and was also the principal investigator for two recently completed investigator initiated trials.
